Second, gonetz, the developer of Glide64, unveiled his newest plugin, GLideN64, which would officially support both the zilmar and Mupen64Plus specs from the beginning. For some time, then, this left the fledgling Mupen64Plus missing out on most cutting-edge plugin development, as most people were still using Project64.Ī semblance of parity began to come about as a result of several major developments: first, Mupen64Plus itself was forked by the libretro team, which made many changes and improvements to the core emulator, and integrated its plugins into the core itself. This left only Project64 as the only relevant and active emulator still using the zilmar spec. ![]() ![]() Mupen64 was forked into Mupen64Plus and developed its own plugin spec that was incompatible with the older zilmar spec, making it unable to use existing plugins unless they were specifically ported to it. 1964's development eventually ceased, and it completely fell off the radar. However, as time went on, things began to change, though slowly at first. Hence the label "plugin hell" was coined, and stuck as a description of the travails of trying to emulate N64 games well into the 2010's. Unsurprisingly, this situation often led to a lot of confusion from users, who often wondered why there were so many plugins, and which ones were the best to use, only to find out it often depended on the game, and even then, some games would refuse to work as intended no matter what was tried. To illustrate the point, here is a site that, as late as 2012, was dedicated to documenting the exact emulator, plugin and settings combination necessary to get each and every game to at least a playable state, if at all possible. This necessitated having all of these emulators and sometimes even older or modified versions of them, along with a great many plugins, to be able to play most of the N64 library with the least amount of issues possible - though admittedly a good amount of games (particularly the most popular ones) were playable with just the best few of them. Each had advantages and disadvantages, and some games worked well in one only to not work in another, even when using the same plugin configuration. Of these, the big three emulators were Project64, 1964 and Mupen64. ![]() Historically, the majority of N64 emulators all shared the same plugin spec (known as the zilmar spec, after the creator of Project64, the first emulator to use it), and could therefore all use the same plugins, meaning you could take a plugin DLL file, use it on one emulator, then take that DLL and use it on another, and it would also work there. ![]() As for the terms HLE and LLE, which will occur with frequency throughout this page, and the difference between them, it is recommended to read this page on High/Low level emulation beforehand. To understand the current plugin situation, and why there are several competing emulators that all appear to use the same plugins but said plugins are not compatible across emulators, a bit of history is in order. ![]() ![]() Kit shown: 1/144 High-Grade MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam. ![]() As wasteful as it is, this also prevents the plastic from rubbing against itself before you can assemble it into a faux-metal Warrior. These are oddballs and can be worth tracking down if you want a weird standout piece in your collection. Speaking of, there were also rare 1/60 kits made for the main character robot from shows produced in the 90s, and are like larger versions of their 1/100 iterations made at the time. These are few and far between and are usually done for marketing reasons. There are a few other scales, like 1/220 (seen briefly in the 80s) and 1/48 (or Mega Grade). Left to right: Perfect Grade RX-78-2, Master Grade RX-78-2. The end result kit tends to be around 3 feet tall, and only the most popular units tend to show up in this scale. Running for hundreds of dollars and sold in boxes that could house a small child, you are in for a long and fulfilling build. Called Perfect Grade (or PG), these are the Hilton of model kits. Older shows also had plain 1/100 model kits that are similar in quality to the Re/100 line as well.įinally, there’s the 1/60 scale. This allowed Bandai to make a fan-beloved design with the armor detail of a Master Grade kit, but also avoid the expensive internal armor frame. There are also some other kits made at the 1/100 scale, such as the Re/100 scale for more obscure robot designs. Pair of 1/144 High-Grade versions for scale. These kits tend to focus on the more popular units of a show, with more obscure units staying at the 1/144 scale unless they can make it on the cheap. These kits tend to be larger, often have their own internal skeletons, and will either be hyper-detailed or designed to be reasonably cartoon-accurate. Going larger, the Master Grade line runs at a 1/100 scale. They look amazing but are also not recommended for beginners or those wishing to build casually. These are insanely detailed, with full internal skeletons, incredible detail, tons of stickers, and really tiny fiddly bits. ![]() There are also the Real Grade (or RG) kits at the 1/144 level. These are slightly simpler, but much more color accurate and have fewer needs. Some 1/144 scale kits lack the HG marker but are labeled Entry Grade instead. You can often find sticker sets that add detail to these kits, but they are also often fairly well detailed without them. These are all literally their proper sizes, at 1/144th scale. The average size is often around 4 to 5 inches high.įrom left to right: PEN-01B Momokapool and the pilot unit, PMX-003 The O, and RX-78-2US American-Type Gundam. This can make some wildly different sizes for the kits themselves, but they all tend to be the same quality of build overall. These are scaled in proportion to the giant pretend robot on-screen and are all 1/144 the size the show says it is. Jumping up, there is the High Grade (or HG) kit. Older kits in this style are even simpler and have a charm all their own about them. The current style is SDCS (Super Deformed Cross Silhouette), which allows for a builder choice between cutely tiny and a more proportioned kit with knees and elbows. These are found with a variety of designs and line names. As such, they almost make the perfect beginner model kit. Super Deformed (or SD for short) kits are pretty common and fairly inexpensive.
